<p><strong>Description:</strong> During Elvis Presley's 23-year career on stage, in films, and on records, he continually used established gospel groups among his back-up musicians. The three major groups that dominated were the Jordanaires (1956-67), the Imperials (1969-71), and J. D. Sumner and the Stamps (1972-77). In each case, the group worked very closely with Elvis in developing the texture of his sound.

My special favorite of these was J. D. Sumner's Stamps, mostly because of Sumner's powerful voice. At the time, Sumner had the most famous voice in gospel music. He had joined the Blackwood Brothers in 1954, and founded the National Quartet Convention, bringing it to Memphis in 1955. In 1965, Sumner left the Blackwoods to become a manager and singer for the Stamps Quartet.

Elvis Presley had grown up listening to Sumner. As Sumner has said, "Like me, Elvis was raised listening to gospel music in the Pentecostal church where they have always had great feeling in their music. He got his beat in his music from the Pentecostal church."

On Elvis' later '70s recordings (most of which are vastly underrated), Sumner's voice comes through like a holy booming beam of light. By 1974, some of the King's older fans were entering middle-age, and so, were responding more favorably to Elvis' gospel sound.

Sumner and the Stamps performed about 100 concerts annually with Elvis in the mid-'70s. "During the last six years of his life," Sumner testifies (and he should know), "Elvis just didn't sing much rock and roll."

During the last year of his life, Elvis planned to do a benefit concert to raise funds to build a Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Nashville to parallel the established Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.

In a speech before the 1978 National Gospel Quartet Convention, Sumner stated that he felt, as a close musical friend, that had Presley lived another six months, he would have converted into a full-time gospel singer.

<p><strong>Description:</strong> After a month's hiatus, we return to the story of Yoga in the US. In the July newsletter we looked at one of the unsung female Yoga pioneers of the 20th century, Sita Devi Yogendra, and I promised you then more about our female trail blazers. So this month we'll visit with a woman whose life spanned the entire 20th century, and whose followers lovingly called her the "First Lady of Yoga."

It's generally believed that Yoga was introduced to this country by the 28-year-old Swami Vivekananda at the 1893 World Parliament of Religion in Chicago, an momentous event held in conjunction with that year's World's Fair. This is sort of true. Vivekananda lectured on Patanjali's Classical Yoga and the three Yogas-Jnana, Karma, and Bhakti-outlined in the Bhagavad Gita. He even taught meditation to a few select students. But most Americans nowadays equate Yoga with the postures or asanas, in other words Hatha Yoga, and the self-proclaimed Swami actually had a rather low opinion of that school. Hatha Yoga, he wrote dismissively, "deals entirely with the physical body"and doesn't "lead to much spiritual growth" (with all due respect, Vivekananda missed the boat on this one, and someday we'll have to come back to these rather common misconceptions about Hatha Yoga and try to clear them up).

There were a few home-grown teachers teaching something like Hatha Yoga in this country in the first half of the 20th century. One that springs immediately to mind is "Oom the Omnipotent," as the media sarcastically dubbed him, whose name was Pierre Bernard. Pierre was a genuine character, a sincere practitioner but at the same time a bit of a rogue, and we'll come back to him someday, along with his wife, Blanche de Vries, also a Yoga teacher, and his nephew Theos, author of one of the classic Yoga books of the first half of the 20th century, titled Hatha Yoga.

One of the first true Hatha teachers in this country though was a woman by the name of Eugenie Petersen. Born in 1899 in what is today Latvia, her father was a Swedish banker, her mother a Russian noblewoman. As a teenager Eugenie read a book about India that sparked her imagination, though who wrote the book is uncertain. It may have been Rabindranath Tagore, an Indian who was the first Asian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature (1913), or Helena Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society in 1875, or the mysterious Yogi Ramacharaka, who authored about a dozen books on Yoga-related subjects in the first decade of the 20th century. We'll return to him someday too, but for now we'll let him remain a mystery.

In 1927 Eugenie finally traveled to India where, because of her performing talents, she won a role in an Indian film and took the stage name that she'd use from then on, Indra Devi. A few years later, after a good deal of dogged persistence, she became the first female ever accepted as a student by the curmudgeonly guru T. Krishnamacharya, who also instructed three other modern Yoga giants, BKS Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois, and TKV Desikachar (his son). During the Second World War, Devi taught Yoga in China (reputedly to Madame Chiang Kai-shek), and then in 1947, immigrated to the US. Here she established one of our first public Yoga schools, in of all places Hollywood, which soon attracted film stars like Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, and Robert Ryan. She moved on to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the mid-1980s, where she died in 2002 at the ripe age of 102. You can still find her books, either online or in used bookstores, so be on the lookout for Yoga for Americans (dedicated to Gloria Swanson, with a Foreward by violinist Yehudi Menuhin), Forever Young, Forever Healthy, and Renew Your Life Through Yoga. </p><br />

	<p><strong>Description:</strong> Thursday, October 9th at 7pm

The Fall Film Series gets off to a horrifying start with this screening of the 1925 silent film horror classic The Phantom of the Opera, featuring live accompaniment by Matt Marshall.

The Phantom of the Opera stars the legendary Lon Chaney, Sr., "Man of a Thousand Faces," in a career-defining role. His groundbreaking, self-applied make-up shocked 1920's audiences, reportedly causing them to scream or faint at the moment of the Phantom's unmasking. This highly influential film paved the way for the great Universal Horror films of the 1930's, and is a well-respected horror classic in it's own right; it's the perfect way to kick-off the Halloween season.

The film will have a live score performed by Matt Marshall, renowned for his regular performances at the Scottsville Victory Hall Theater; Marshall also teaches Film and Music courses for UVA's Continuing Education School, and is the founder of the Reel Music Ensemble.

Please remember that our Fall screenings begin at 7pm rather than at 8:00; admission remains a $5 suggested donation.</p><br />

	<p><strong>Description:</strong> Thursday, November 6 at 7pm

In a screening co-sponsored by the Charlottesville-Albemarle Health Department, The Bridge PAI will screen a segment of the documentary Unnatural Causes this November, as part of a community awareness campaign regarding health disparities.

Unnatural Causes was produced by California Newsreel in order to draw attention to the root causes of health and illness and to help reframe the debate about health in America, particularly with regard to economic and racial issues. The seven-part documentary series criss-crosses the country, investigating findings that are shaking up our conventional understanding of health. In particular, Episode 2: When the Bough Breaks, specifically addresses how racial disparities affect birth outcomes, which is clearly relevant given recent data on racial health issues here in Charlottesville, especially concerning infant mortality.

The 30-minute video will be followed by an informative discussion, accompanied by handouts and relevant information. This event is free and open to the public.</p><br />

<p><strong>Description:</strong> In the Yogic path, there are guidelines, to obtaining "union with the Divine" (definition of Yoga). They are similar to the ten commandments, things like truthfulness, non-violence, cleanliness and so on.

One of these guidelines is non-hoarding/sharing, or aparigraha. Also known as Seva (string in Sanskrit). Seva refers to how we are all connected in the thread of existence. To engage one is to engage the whole. To serve one is to serve the whole. Seva, a practice of devotional yoga, is known as the practice of selfless service.

Our beloved friend and Yoga teacher, Jakub Holy was in a tragic climbing accident, breaking both his heels. He is now safe, mostly sound and in recovery. His outlook is good, but the road is long. Jakub is someone who embodies loving kindness, generosity and Yoga.

When we let go of all self-cherishing, ego-driven, or selfish desire, then the yogi is able to concentrate on the Divine. The practice of aparigraha is a perfect chance to share what you have, at the same time help out a beloved. Trusting in this abundant, never-ending energy called money, is a practice. Just like headstand is a practice. Finding your center, your breath, and your intention for this action whether it be giving or a headstand, requires practice.

Please donate any amount you can to Jakub's recovery. You can send him a donation using paypal. His paypal account email address is yogawithjakub@gmail.com. You can also contact him directly there.

Love all ways, Stephanie</p><br />

<p><strong>Description:</strong> Find out why gender-specific classes can provide an inspiring teaching experience while attracting an appreciate audence.

As teachers, we can be artists who sculpt experiences for our students through words we use to teach a pose, the music we play during class, or even the ways we decorate our studios. We can also create a more meaningful experience by opting to teach to targe audiences.

This is not a new concept. A glance at any studio's schedule offers us plenty of options: Basics, Level 2/3, Hot Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Mysore, Meditation. Rarely, however, do we see options such as Women's Yoga or Men's Yoga listed.

Yes, yoga offers freedom to everyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or religion; but are there times when it would be more effective to teach to men or women only? And if so, is such an undertaking financially viable?

Let Personal Experience Guide You

Teaching to a target audience isn't for everyone. And the maxim of "teach what you know and what inspires you" applies to gender-specific classes, too. For Janice Gates, author of Yogini: The Power of Women in Yoga and owner of the Yoga Garden in San Anselmo, California, the inspiration to teach women's-only yoga retreats arose out of her personal practice.

"In the early '90s, when I was practicing and teaching Ashtanga Yoga," she explains, " I kept bumping up against the reality that the practice was designed by and for men and had a very masculine flavor to it. Meanwhile, most of my women at that time were women."

Gates then began exploring other styles of yoga and applying her findings to her teaching. "The response was overwhelming," she says. "women were hungry for a safe and sacred space to voice their personal challenges, discuss what was and what was not working for them, and explore alternative ways of practice."

"The response was overwhelming," she says. "Women were hungry for a safe and sacred space to voice their personal challenges, discuss what was and what was not working for them, and explore alternative ways of practice." Bruce Brassock, founder of Elements Yoga Wellness Center in Darien, Connecticut, teaches a popular Yoga for Men program. Like Gates, this arose out of personal interest and perceived need.

" I decided to teach a men's-only class because yoga changed my life," he says. "I truly wanted to share this with others. I suspected that there were a lot of men in town who could greatly benefit from yoga if they'd just try it."

For Women Only

Angela Farmer, who teaches worldwide and runs a retreat center in Greece with with her partner Victor van Kooten, celebrates the opportunity to teach her women's retreats. "There is definitely [a need for] a place in our busy lives and competitive society to come back to the beauty of just being a woman, " she says.

"When I teach only to women, it is more intimate," she continues. "I feel less like the teacher and more there to inspire, encourage, and support. Having 'sisters' is so ancient, and yet deeply needed in this present time."

Women Wired for Connection

Gates notices that she can place a greater emphasis on the mind and emotions when she teaches her women's only retreats. Women establish bonds of trust and intimacy very easily during these times, she says, thus creating a "sacred container" in which to unravel deeply held emotions.

"It is no secret that women are wired for connection," she says. "There is much more of an opportunity to share, connect, laugh, cry. Connection, resonance, and community-building have immense power for healing and empowering women."

Gates emphasizes meditation and personal reflection, with less emphasis on technique in poses.
Farmer applies a similar approach. As a result, she says, "The classes become more playful, creative, and exploratory."

<p><strong>Description:</strong> October 3rd-28th, with an opening Reception October 3rd.

A Group Show curated by Colin L, featuring artists C.F., Sara Shapouri, Nick Kuszyk, Hillbilly Werewolf, dearraindrop, MOOSEJAW, Deya Ramsden, Shawn Thornton, John Fritz, Tom Hohmann, Sebastion Paulson, Heather Clark, John Erik Lawson, Meghan Eckman, and Thom Klepach.

Bursting from brilliant and battered art-addled brains, noise-damaged ears and hearts distended with love and hubris, this show will present a selection of contemporary art that promises to dazzle and disturb in a way that few art shows still do. The thread that connects these diverse artistic talents is Colin L, a musician/artist/ringleader of tormentors who some locals will remember as co-catalyst, with Usaisamonster bandmate and fellow artist Tom Hohmann, of Charlottesville's legendary Pudhaus performance space. Colin's energy and spirit once brought important wandering weirdos together for musical catharsis right here in Charlottesville, and this art show carries the seed of that spirit, gathering many artists whose lives intersected in that space back together for this important show.

The gallery will be crammed with art: video and ephemera that looks back at halcyon Pudhaus days in the small room, a survey of the present and future of brain melt from over 15 contemporary visual artists in the big room, as well as a merch table of prints, zines and music from the whole gang. The October 3rd opening party will also feature a lecture from Philly-based lord-of-flies Brandon Joyce and acoustic noise ( the rock) from Colin L. This will be so beautiful, it is scary.</p><br />

	<p><strong>Description:</strong> Friday, August 8th at 8pm

Join us for another heavy-ass rock show at The Bridge, with Worn in Red, WereBear, and Fag Static.

Worn in Red are a screamy, driving cathari-rock act from Charlottesville and Richmond. They've been around since November of 2004, though the current line-up has only been together since October of 2007. They have been fortunate to play with a bunch of rad bands, including: Melt-Banana, Glass amp; Ashes, Modern Life Is War, Thunderlip!, The Life amp; Times, Bella Fea, Pash, Young Livers, Mass Movement of the Moth, The Points, Mouthbreather, The Catalyst, I Am The Avalanche, Jena Berlin, Sparrows Swarm amp; Sing, Pink Razors, Bullet Train To Vegas, Tubers, Young Hearts, Pyramids, Lost Hands Found Fingers, This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb, The Draft, Small Brown Bike, and Seaweed.

Fag Static features former members of Atlanta-based spazzed-out mathcore band Blame Game. Chad Radford from Creative Loafing Atlanta says: "An aggressive and art-driven sound that doesnte i,l tp leaol cdh tkbhhbia eu,njtsi re dar sae

<title>Lost in Translation: Tips for Teaching Yoga to Nonnative English Speakers</title>
							<comments>http://www.accumulist.com/index.php?whatPage=tagComments&amp;tagId=8277</comments>
							<link>http://www.ihanuman.com/index.php?pageId=14384</link>

<p><strong>Description:</strong> Teaching to nonnative English speakers is challenging, but these tips will help you make sure your teaching transcends all language and cultural barriers.

Once, while teaching in Paris with a translator, Nischala Joy Devi, international teacher and author of The Secret Power of Yoga and The Healing Path of Yoga, was asked by an English-speaking student if she would return to teach there again. "There are certainly worse places I could come back to
than Paris," Devi replied, smiling. The translator delivered her response to the group and, upon seeing the ensuing sea of horrified faces, Devi stammered to the translator, "What did you say to them?"
"That Paris was the worst place you could come to," the translator answered with a grimace."

Devi is not alone in her miscommunication conundrum. Today many yoga teachers jet around the globe, teaching to diverse audiences. And in the melting pot of the modern world, one need not even leave her hometown to encounter class audiences that include nonnative English speakers. As teachers, we need to ask ourselves whether our teachings touch the hearts of all our studentsralsfuu, tit teaueH neo rklstttesareeheeefo spela fte?

	<p><strong>Description:</strong> Thursday, July 31st at 8pm

The Bridge Summer Film Series starts off with a special guest this year: puppet-master and Charlottesville ex-patriot BenJones. In 2005, Jones was living in New York City running a comic-book store called Jigsaw. He created two puppets as a promotional device for the store: Dr. Kranium, the stodgy, humorless mad scientist; and Milton, his long-suffering, wisecracking robot servant; The Jigsaw Video Show was born. Three years and two cities later, the comic store has closed down, but the puppet show lives on! Milton and Kranium have re-located to Charlottesville and are still producing short, internet-distrubuted episodes on a weekly basis.

Informed by an encyclopedic knowledge of obscure British sitcoms, a comprehensive understanding of time-tested vaudeville gags, years of stage experience, and a lifelong obession with the Muppets, Jones has infused The Jigsaw Show Thing with sharp wit, crack comic timing, memorable original music, and a confounding ability to portray multiple puppet-characters simultaneously. Over the course of the show's 35+ episodes, extended plot-lines have slowly developed, memorable bit characters have become full cast members, and show has taken on a humorously self-referential and self-depricatingly autobiographical tone. To read more about the The Jigsaw Puppet Thing, check out this article in the C-Ville Weekly.

Weekly episodes of Jigsaw are available online, but the show best appreciated in large doses with a crowd of friends; that's precisely what we'll do on July 31st, as we gather at The Bridge for an evening of Jigsaw's finest episodes, hosted by Jones and Milton themselves, who will provide snarky introductions, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and witty commentary. It starts at 8pm sharp, with a suggested donation of $5.</p><br />

	<p><strong>Description:</strong> Thursday, July 17 at 8pm

Our summer of musical mayhem at The Bridge continues; join us for an exciting 3-band show on July 17th. We'll start off with Myceum, the alias of c-ville artist Scott Ritchie, who was last seen at The Bridge in June, taking us on a pedal-heavy drone odyssey when he opened for DickHearse. Next up are out-of-towners Simple, a solid psych-pop / indie-rock act.

Articulate Chewbacca occupy a territory somewhere in-between those two styles; the all-star line-up (featuring half of c-ville prog-rockers Truman Sparks, the rhythm section from locals The Nice Jenkins, and Scott from Myceum) explores instrumental, rhythmic kraut-influenced rock explosions. Don't miss it!

The show will start around 8:30pm, with a cover charge of $5.</p><br />

<p><strong>Description:</strong> We are creating a christening bead bracelet along with the other women in the new life of Annabella Patton McCoy. Amidst my collection, I found some beautiful rose quartz beads that I think will suit her well. A healing stones jewelry website shares the healing qualities of rose quartz for my little Bella.

"Rose quartz projects soft, soothing vibrations that resonate with the frequency of unconditional love, stimulating the heart chakra. Rose quartz is a gently healing stone, allowing for the slow opening of the heart to love and healing. Rose quartz supports the wearer or bearer in all spiritual practices and daily activities that promote the development of compassion for all beings -- and especially for oneself. Rose quartz has often been used in the treatment of wounds to the emotional body, and especially a wounded heart, but can also be used effectively in treatment of the throat, third eye and crown chakra."

	<p><strong>Description:</strong>

A team of artists and arts educators from the UVA School of Architecture, The Bridge PAI, and Piedmont Council of the Arts are collaborating on a unique public art project for Charlottesville Parks and Recreation. After a series of hands-on workshops with Parks and Rec summer campers, the team will repaint a school bus, transforming it into an exciting, kid-friendly vehicle. Already in gestation, the bus design weaves together visual elements of urban life and the natural world, highlighting a young person's unique perspective of and experience in the world.

The newly painted bus, to be unveiled to the public on Friday July 18th, will transport young people to and from recreation programs throughout the year. Additionally, The Bridge will be hosting a three-day exhibit on August 1-3 to showcase the rough drafts, visual excercises, and preperatory studies created in the FunBus youth workshops.</p><br />

	<p><strong>Description:</strong> Monday, July 7th at 8pm

The HzCollective returns to the Bridge to present an evening of experimental and improvised music with live electronics. NanoHz No. 16's line-up will include performances by Richmond duo Insects With Tits, Norgwegian collaborators Nernes/Skagen, and Cville favorites Pinko Communoids. The show will begin at 9pm, with a suggested donation of $3-$5. Read below for more information on each band.

Insects With Tits is Kenneth Yates [HarmStryker / Caustic Castle / 804noise / HzCollective] and Roger H. Smith [Chefkirk / 804noise]. This collaborative project brings together two very different but complimentary approaches to improvised no-input style mixing and processing that results in a colorful spectrum of frequencies and harsh tones and low rumbling bass.

	<p><strong>Description:</strong> Saturday, July 19, 9:30 a.m. to 5 pm
Cost: $95 (includes refreshments, snacks and Saturday lunch)

In this workshop led by Rachel Mann, we will engage our natural spontaneity and courage to be ourselves and to release ancient traumas and patterns that no longer serve us. Shamanism and indigenous healing practices are rooted in the use of art, ritual, storytelling and play to engage directly with the unconscious and the energies in our lives.

In the western model of working, we use talk therapy to bring us to deeper understandings of ourselves and to change old patterns. In shamanic work, we work with more primal processes natural to our bodysei cnmtdepng dala afmi.oi ilec i at aeiosv dhwlau tgaee lb lhn devadF o oo eo lrnuheowkastsospi sri di luriorhalyol phoo lce
